People watching a performance at the International Festival on Sunday, at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Botanical Garden of the Ozarks was alive Sept. 7 with hundreds of people, music, and food. The Great Lawn was decorated with tents belonging to different organizations, and groups throughout the Northwest Arkansas community.
From start to finish the atmosphere was warm and inviting, with people of many backgrounds excited to show off parts of their culture and educate others on where they’re from. Food, treats and many other products were available for purchase from local businesses. Curious people interested in learning more about their neighbors wandered among the stands and booths.

However, the stands weren’t the only way to learn about the cultures present. There were traditional dances by the Afghan Community Organization of NWA, Chinese Association of NWA, Ballet Folklorico Herencia de Mexico, and many more. As well as performances by FiNiX Reggae and Papa Rap.
Ann Maina, Education and Events Coordinator for the Botanical Garden, said, “This year we tried to be very careful to make sure to diversify the groups that came out [and] try and represent the underrepresented groups and make sure they feel as equally represented as other groups around.”
Shreya and Khant, students at Haas Hall Academy and members of the Asian & Pacific Islander Student Association, said, “I feel like everyone could use a little more empathy right now; it’s nice to see that behind the countries there’s real people …” with Shreya adding, “It’s even more important for us to celebrate our differences, and even more than differences, celebrate our similarities and the uniqueness of this culture at Northwest Arkansas.”
The festival was just a glimpse into our diverse community showing that there’s plenty to discover. If you missed this event, more are on the way. For details check out https://welcomingweeknwa.org/events/
